Dock Levelers and Edge-of-Dock

On a truck loading dock there are two basic types of “levelers”:  The better, longer-lived one is a “Pit leveler” (also known as a “board”) and the other, less expensive and limited one is an “Edge-of-Dock” (also called an EOD or “flip ramp”.  Both units are available in a hydraulic – push button operation – and a mechanical – pull chain operation – version.  As mentioned, there are many different versions of levelers, but these four variants are the most common found.

The EOD attaches to the horizontal face of the loading dock (must be attached to a minimum 8” embedded plate for safety and warranty concerns).  They are generally found in 66”-84” deck widths with bumper pods attached to the sides and have a capacity in the vicinity of 20-35,000 pounds.  They usually have a working range of 4” below dock level to 10” above but with a 16” ramp, extreme ranges are problematic.  These units are best used when the loads and the number of cycles over the board are light, with ideal conditions when trailers are part of a captured fleet.  Some options are available for these units.

“Pit Levelers” are placed in a formed pit then welded in to position; dock bumpers are mounted adjacent to either side of the pit to protect the concrete dock and the front of the leveler.  Pit levelers come in a wide range of sizes and capacities as well as options.  The board sizes ranges from 72” up to 120” wide by 72” to 144” deep.  Capacities are 20,000 pounds up to 80,000 pounds.  Due to the range of dock conditions and board combinations, we perform a site inspection prior to quoting equipment, particularly if existing boards are old and are being considered for replacement.

Automatic Trailer Restraints

The ABC DOCKS Automatic Trailer Restraint, Model ATR-700, is a non-impact design in a low-profile housing and an absolute must for safe loading/unloading operations at the truck dock.  It is designed to engage the ICC bar at the rear of the trailer and hold it securely at the dock to eliminate unintended movement of the trailer and potentially serious employee injury and product damage.  The unit, mounted to the face of the dock at grade has a holding force of 50,000 pounds and an anchoring force of 100,000 pounds.  Comes complete with Communication Light and Sign Package and requires 115v/1ph hookup.  Operation is automatic, electric, push button.
